Havana and Pinar del Rio, Cuba

Sample Program

July 5:  Arrival, Transfer to hotel; Orientation and Informational Meeting with tour leaders; Evening Presentation on "Life in Cuba Today" and optional cultural activity

July 6:  City Tour of Havana and Old Havana with focus on sites of environmental, historical and cultural interest; Museum of the Revolution; Welcome Dinner with Cuban guest speakers from variety of environmental fields

July 7:  All day excursion to Las Terrazas in province of Pinar del Rio, an intentional sustainable community to visit reforestation projects, organic garden and restaurant, artists' studios, school, family doctor clinic, museum; lunch at vegetarian restaurant with Cuba's foremost vegetarian pioneer; Afternoon hike in Biosphere Reserve in Sierra Los Rosarios; Evening presentation on topics of interest to group by CITMA conference presenters** and/or optional cultural activity

July 8:  Meeting with Antonio Núñez Jimenez Foundation for Nature and Humanity (FANJ); Site visits to projects of urban permaculture and sustainable urban renewal; Afternoon presentation on economic and socio-political systems in Cuba, historically and currently; Evening opening of CITMA conference.

July 9:  Morning Exchange with CITMA conferees*; Afternoon/Evening site visits and presentation on topics of interest to group** and/or optional cultural activity

July 10:   Morning Exchange with CITMA conferees*; Afternoon/Evening site visits and presentation on topics of interest to group** and/or optional cultural activity

July 11:  Morning Exchange with CITMA conferees*; Afternoon/Evening site visits and presentation on topics of interest to group** and/or optional cultural activity

July 12:  Morning Exchange with CITMA conferees*; free afternoon in Havana for individual professional pursuits and/or site visits and presentation on topics of interest to group; optional evening cultural activity

July 13:  Excursion to coastal area near Havana; Bicycle tour of Havana or outlying region with Gran Caribe Bicycle Club; or follow up work with Cuban environmentalists; Evaluation meeting; Closing dinner with Cuban hosts and guests

July 14:  Departure for U.S.

* The Exchanges with CITMA conferees will include the following topics:

  • Cuba's Overall Sustainable Agriculture policy and practice and the Urban Gardens program with Cuban representatives of ACTAF (Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestal Technicians), ANAP (National Association of Small Farmers), and FANJ
  • Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency with representatives of Cuba Solar (NGO) and Cubaenergía (Department of CITMA)
  • Wetlands, Coastal and Marine ecosystem protection and maintenance
  • Protection of Biodiversity and Endemic Species in Cuba
  • The integration of community/neighborhood social welfare programs with environmental/sustainability programs and Environmental Education
  • Policy and practice regarding Climate Change, Global Warming, and Disaster Preparedness

** Afternoon site visits may include:

  • Alamar, the largest organiponico (urban garden) in Havana
  • Cuba Solar and Cuba Energía, renewable energy and energy efficiency NGO and CITMA department, respectively
  • Center for Marine Research
  • University of Havana environmental department
  • Metropolitan Park constructed wetlands project along Almendares River
  • Neighborhood community development project such as: Martin Luther King Center, Paolo Friere Center, La Murealando art and ecology project.

** Cultural options may include:

  • Salsa Music Clubs
  • Afro Cuban Rhythms and Art
  • La Colmenita Childrens Theater musical performance
  • Classical concerts (music or ballet)
  • Museums (art, literacy, others)
